the same this is happening to me and I am not sure how to fix it b/c you can't see anything when the screen goes black. The screen goes blank as the video card drivers are loaded and then appears using the video card specific drivers. The setup went through without a problem but I have not been able to go beyond the splash screen. You may be able to install/reinstall your video drivers now.
Maybe he swap the video for a known good once to see if that helps? Just answer them the best you can and if you dont know an answer its ok. My preference is to see if I can get XP working again without reformatting but I think I could reformat the computer without a CD. If you are not sure how to set a jumper just google it for directions and it should help, but hard drive a labeled. Not sure about the Service pack. 4).
