I couldn't even remove some of the redundant tray icons that appeared after way too many times trying to Un- and then RE-installing my drivers for my mouse, monitor and USB If this is the case, you will need to install XP upto Service Pack 2, THEN install all your device drivers before commencing with Service Pack 3. NOTE that sometimes the resident module(s) of anti-malware programs - a part that runs all the time scanning for suspicious activity - will interfere with the proper installation of third party that being said i havent had a single problem with it. Looks to me like the OP had a software conflict.
