From reading your article, it sounds like I will have to format all data off the drive if I want it to be recognised by Windows? After finding your article, written so I could understand it, I gained the confidence I needed to do it. I put an old 80 gig drive in a computer with xp service pack 1 on a 100 gig drive that has been in service for 6 years. http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/324442-31-build-recognizing-hard-drive I got as far as the pop up page showing me the controller card, and the new drive added to the controller card. Hi guys, thanks for the info, have now added new folders (capture and Temp) to the 'F' drive and changed the software prog to send there. I think I got them all clean out now. I just bought a ATA 320GBHD. navigate here I have a dell and it was givng me a message that there was no boot drive installed, repeatedly for months.

Don't force them.If you need a separate controller card, install it now into any unused motherboard slot. Be sure not to bump anything too hard on the way out.If you are replacing the old drive, slide the new drive in right where the other one came out. Today’s massive drives, with capacities exceeding 1TB, can create that illusion. I have no idea about computers and never opened up the box.

I am new to SATA drives, and used to EIDE so didn't know I had to initialize it.Thanks for the help. In the process of removing my backup files and converting to use the back up as the main drive, I got the message "hard drive failure is eminent".
